To create digital products with ChatGPT and Canva, use ChatGPT to plan and write the content (a planner's sections, a checklist's steps, a workbook's prompts), use Canva to design it into clean pages, export a PDF, and sell it from a simple sales page or a marketplace. You can start with free plans of all three tools.

The tools are the easy part. What decides whether anyone buys is what you make, who it's for, and whether it's actually better than the free stuff online. This guide walks through the full process, including the Canva licensing rule that trips up beginners.

The short version: watch our Short, then read the full guide below.

What kind of digital product should you make?

Good beginner products solve one clear problem for one clear person, and work as a PDF they can print or fill in:

Product type Example Who buys it
Planner "Weekly Meal Planner for Busy Parents" People who want structure
Checklist "First Apartment Moving Checklist" People facing a one-time task
Workbook "30-Day Budget Reset Workbook" People who want guided change
Templates "Freelance Invoice and Quote Templates" Small business owners
Kids' printables "Preschool Tracing Worksheets: Animals" Parents and teachers
Mini guide "Beginner's Guide to Sourdough, 12 Pages" Hobbyists

Pick one where you know the audience or the subject. A nurse writing a "new grad nurse shift planner" will beat a generic planner every time, because the details are right.

Step 1: Validate the idea before you design anything

Spend 20 minutes checking demand:

  1. Search the marketplaces. Look up your idea on Etsy and other printable shops. Plenty of competition usually means real demand. Read the reviews of top sellers to see what buyers wish were different.
  2. Check search suggestions. Type the start of your idea into Google or Pinterest and note the autocomplete phrases. They show the words buyers use.
  3. Find your angle. Narrow it down ("budget planner for couples," "for nurses," "for teachers") or make it better (a fillable version, a quick-start page, a printing guide).

Ask ChatGPT to help you brainstorm angles, but treat its ideas as a starting list, not proof of demand:

I want to sell a printable [product] for [audience].
List 10 specific angles that would make it more useful than generic versions.
For each, say what page or feature it adds.

Step 2: Write the content with ChatGPT

Have ChatGPT build the structure first, then fill it in section by section. That gives better results than asking for the whole product at once.

Outline prompt:

Create a detailed outline for a [number]-page printable [product] for [audience].
Goal: help them [outcome]. Include page titles, what each page contains,
and any tables, checklists or fill-in fields per page.

Page prompt:

Write the content for page [X]: "[page title]". Keep it short, practical and
printable. Use bullet points and fill-in blanks where useful. US English.

Then edit like a human expert. Cut generic advice, check every fact, and add the details only someone who knows the topic would include. This step is what turns AI text into a product people pay for and recommend. ChatGPT has a free plan with usage limits. If you write a lot, a paid plan raises them, but you don't need one to start.

Tip: Run the final text through a grammar checker such as Grammarly. Its free plan catches spelling and grammar mistakes, and a typo in a paid product costs you reviews.

Step 3: Design the pages in Canva

Open Canva and create a design at your print size: US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) for US buyers, A4 for the UK and Europe. Many sellers include both.

A simple workflow:

  1. Pick a clean template or start blank, and set 2 brand colors and 2 fonts for the whole product.
  2. Make a master page (header, footer, margins), then duplicate it for every page so the layout stays consistent.
  3. Paste in your edited ChatGPT text, using tables and lines for fill-in areas.
  4. Leave white space. Printables that are crammed are hard to use and look cheap.
  5. Add a cover page and a short "how to use / how to print" page.

Canva's licensing rule (read this before you sell)

Canva's help page on selling products is clear: if you want to sell a product, it needs to be an original design, and you can't sell Canva content on a standalone basis. In practice:

  • Don't sell an unchanged Canva template, or Canva photos and graphics on their own, as your product.
  • Do build your own layout, with your own content, and use Canva elements as parts of a larger original design.
  • Template rules are stricter than other content, and some special-license elements can't be used commercially at all. Read Canva's Content License Agreement if you're unsure.

Step 4: Export the right files

  • PDF Print for printables, at high quality.
  • PDF Standard if you want a smaller file to email or download quickly.
  • If buyers will fill it in on a tablet, test it in a PDF app (or make a separate fillable version).

Open every page of the final PDF on your phone and on a computer, and print one copy. Fix anything cut off, blurry or misaligned.

Step 5: Sell it

You have two main routes, and many sellers use both.

Option A: Your own sales page

Your own page means you keep the customer relationship, including their email for future launches. systeme.io has a free plan that covers this. Its pricing page lists the free plan with 2,000 contacts, 3 sales funnels, 1 course, unlimited email sends and 0% transaction fees. You connect a payment processor such as Stripe or PayPal and deliver the PDF automatically after purchase.

One limit to know: systeme.io says the free plan can process up to $10,000 in total sales, after which you have 3 days to upgrade to keep taking payments. Its paid plans start at $17 a month (Startup). We break it down in our systeme.io review.

Option B: A marketplace

Marketplaces like Etsy bring buyers who are already searching, but you pay their fees and compete inside their search results. Read the platform's current rules for digital items and AI content first. We cover Etsy's rules in Can You Sell AI Art on Etsy?.

Step 6: Get your first buyers without ads

  • Pinterest: create 5 to 10 pins per product showing real pages, linking to your sales page.
  • Short videos: a 30-second flip-through of the product works well on YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Reels. Our own Short above shows the ChatGPT + Canva workflow in about 40 seconds.
  • A free sample: give away one page in exchange for an email address (systeme.io's free plan handles the opt-in page and emails), then offer the full product.
  • Communities: answer questions where your audience hangs out, and share the product only where the rules allow it.

Common mistakes

  • Selling a lightly edited template. It breaks Canva's rules and gives buyers nothing new.
  • Publishing AI text unedited. Generic, padded content gets refunds and bad reviews.
  • Too many products, too fast. One good product with 10 good pins beats 10 rushed products.
  • Income-claim marketing. Don't promise buyers results you can't back up.

FAQ

Can I legally sell products I design in Canva?

Yes, as long as the product is your own original design. Canva says you can't sell its content on a standalone basis, so an unchanged template or stock graphic can't be the product itself.

Do I need ChatGPT Plus to make digital products?

No. ChatGPT's free plan is enough to outline and draft a product. Paid plans raise usage limits, which helps if you produce a lot.

What's the best format for a printable digital product?

A PDF. Offer US Letter for US buyers and A4 for most other countries, and test-print it before you sell.

Where should I sell my first digital product?

A marketplace gives you built-in search traffic, and your own page (for example on systeme.io's free plan) gives you buyer emails and no marketplace fees. Many sellers start on one and add the other.

How much money can I make selling digital products?

There's no honest single number. Results depend on the product, the audience and your marketing, and many first products sell little. Start small, learn from real buyers, then improve.
